Typically forming within highly cumuliform clouds, particularly cumulonimbus, these meteorological phenomena are often accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds, and sometimes snow, sleet, or hail. Thunderstorms are capable of creating intense weather events such as tornadoes and are centrally fueled by the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air. Each year, the Earth experiences about 16 million thunderstorms, and at any given moment, there are approximately 2,000 thunderstorms in progress around the world.
