***: The saguaro cactus, scientifically known as Carnegiea gigantea, is a giant cactus native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the Mexican State of Sonora, and small parts of California and Baja California. This impressive plant is celebrated for its considerable size, often reaching heights of up to 40 feet. Saguaros have a slow growth rate and may live for 150 to 200 years. They develop branches, or arms, as they age, which generally begin to appear around 50 to 70 years of age. Saguaros are also vital to the desert ecosystem, serving as nesting sites for birds and providing moisture and food for numerous desert animals, especially during flowering and fruiting periods.
